Boiler Water Treatment
Optimise and protect your industrial boiler
Industrial boilers are used across a wide range of markets for differing applications. The steam that they generate is an essential component of processes across pharmaceutical, healthcare, power, manufacturing and food & beverage industries. Therefore, industrial boiler water treatment is necessary to prevent damage and ensure optimal performance.
What are the problems?
A supply of water is required to generate steam inside an industrial boiler but the feedwater used is often filled with impurities. These impurities can cause a host of issues that begin with inefficiency and end with severe damage and downtime. These include:Scaling - This is where dissolved minerals in the feedwater precipitate out and form deposits on the metal surfaces, reducing the heat transfer efficiency of the boiler and requiring more energy to boil the water.
Corrosion - This occurs when the metal surfaces in the boiler are exposed to water and oxygen, which can cause rust and eventually crack and disintegrate the boiler’s metal.
Foaming - Solids in the boiler tank’s water can float to the top and lead to the carryover of minerals and chemicals into the steam, which can cause damage to downstream equipment and processes.

What are the Solutions?
Water Treatment Technologies
There are many different technologies that can be applied to ensure an optimised boiler, one option is a water softener. Water softening involves the filtration of hard water through an ion exchange resin bed, which attracts the calcium and magnesium ions and prevents them from causing unwanted scaling.
To remove further contaminants, a reverse osmosis (RO) system is a proven, effective option. The RO system uses a semi-permeable membrane to filter out contaminants and produce purified water that is extremely low in dissolved solids.
In high-pressure boilers and critical industrial applications, reverse osmosis (RO) may be followed by Continuous Electrodeionisation (CEDI) technology to ensure the highest water purity level. CEDI is a highly efficient demineralisation process that utilises both electricity and ion exchange membranes to separate dissolved impurities (ions) from water. CEDI systems are capable of producing water with low levels of dissolved ions, typically less than one part per billion. This level of purity is critical in many high-pressure boiler applications and industrial processes where even trace amounts of impurities can cause damage or reduce the efficiency of the system.
Water Treatment Chemicals
Our Hydrex chemical range is expansive and effective. The range includes both organic and inorganic chemicals formulated to meet the individual needs of low to high-pressure boilers across different markets.
A water treatment chemical programme can be used to target three main areas across an industrial boiler to ensure optimal performance, longevity and uptime. We focus on protecting your boiler system by removing or modifying harmful substances.
Our pre-treatment programs remove impurities from raw water before they enter the boiler system.
Our internal treatment includes a survey of your system to identify any issues and our experts apply the necessary chemistries to prevent scaling and corrosion, extending the lifespan of your equipment while lowering costs and environmental impact.
For steam condensate treatment, we use products like neutralising amines and filming amines to prevent contamination and protect pipework from corrosion, reducing the need for costly replacements.
Why Choose us?
Working out the correct path to take when trying to protect and optimise an industrial boiler can be tricky as there are many aspects and variables to consider. It is important to partner with an experienced water treatment specialist for effective boiler water treatment solutions.
At Veolia Water Technologies UK, our expert engineers assess feed water and the condition of the boiler to recommend the most effective solution. We trial the technology using mobile assets before full implementation and offer technical support from design to maintenance. As well as an expansive range of technologies to an equally impressive chemical catalogue, we also provide digital monitoring support and operator training for the best results.
