# **Cosmetics manufacturing facility achieves 90% water reuse with an integrated evaporation solution**

Water reuse achieved with rapid payback period of approximately 10 months

## **The client's needs:**

A multinational cosmetics company operating a 24/6 production facility in Italy encountered significant environmental and operational challenges related to wastewater management and resource consumption. The facility's wastewater, generated from liquid and cream cosmetics production, contained extremely high levels of organic contamination, with chemical oxygen demand (COD) exceeding 50,000 ppm and surfactants at concentrations exceeding 30,000 ppm. The existing membrane bioreactor (MBR) biological treatment plant effectively treated organic loads but generated substantial quantities of biological sludge requiring costly disposal. The facility needed a solution to reduce sludge production and disposal costs while enabling water reuse to support corporate sustainability goals.

## **The solution:**

Veolia provided a two-stage evaporation system integrated with the existing MBR biological plant. Constructed from UNS S32750 super duplex stainless steel to handle aggressive cosmetics industry wastewater, the system pre-concentrates wastewater before biological treatment. This maximises water recovery and minimises waste and biological sludge production, drastically reducing its organic load.
