Reduce operational costs and meet regulations in municipal water treatment

Severn Trent Water undertook an infrastructure overhaul at their Clowne, Derbyshire site to accommodate increasing population demands and regulation changes set by the Water Framework Directive (WFD). The site was required to tighten its permits to reduce total phosphorus from 1 mg/l to 0.2 mg/l and ammonia from 5 mg/l to 4 mg/l while experiencing a significant increase in wastewater loads. The site had a constrained footprint with limited construction space and 33kW overhead power lines requiring tight controls on lifting operations. Following a competitive bid process, Veolia installed, tested and commissioned two Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) systems designed with a smaller base and taller height to fit onto custom-built paving slabs. Key results include reduced ammonia and phosphorus levels in the final effluent, improved ecological condition protecting local river water quality, no need for sludge recirculation as MBBR is a stand-alone system, additional treatment capacity to accommodate future population increases, and delivery six weeks ahead of schedule.

Working beyond its permissible capacity, Svinninge Wastewater Treatment Plant needed to increase the existing plant's capacity to ensure effective treatment while meeting environmental requirements. The challenge involved expanding treatment capacity within space constraints while maintaining sustainability goals. Veolia provided Cella™, an innovative biofilm technology, chosen for its sustainability, small ecological footprint, compactness, and process efficiency. Key results include increased treatment capacity meeting regulatory requirements, compact solution minimising site footprint, sustainable technology with reduced environmental impact, and efficient process delivering reliable performance for the expanded facility.

Scottish Water needed to increase treatment capacity at Newmore Water Treatment Works while improving response to sudden high raw water colour events combined with turbidity increases. Veolia provided process design, construction, installation, testing, and commissioning of 2 Actiflo® High Rate Clarifiers, including sand storage and transfer system, polymer make-up and dosing system, coagulation and pH correction system, MCC and software. Key results include Actiflo proving more effective and versatile than original clarifiers in dealing with raw water variations, with the ability to start-up and achieve treatment requirements within minutes.
